Sir Gawain and the Green KnightIncreasingly diverse literary texts of the Middle Ages reflect an increasingly diverse world. At the heart of educated culture is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (c. 1375). The Gawain poet wrote at the same time as Chaucer, and the poem owes a large debt to French literary culture. It is a romance in which readers follow a single hero on a quest. It stresses the importance of a chivalric code, as in the poem a member of the court sees an exaggerated version of the trials he might face in life and is presented with a model of how he should conduct himself.
