We will read a great deal of literature together as a class. In addition, it is important that you also work with nonfiction texts. To that end, you will regularly be assigned news articles that relate in some way to the literature we are discussing in class. You will have time to read, annotate, and reflect on the articles. We will then have class discussions using these articles.
At the beginning of the year, you will receive articles often. As you demonstrate proficiency of these skills, the articles may be assigned less frequently and the written reflections may be less formal. The goal is that you learn to read nonfiction critically, form your own opinions on the topics addressed in the articles, and articulate those opinions in writing and in discussions.
Due to time constraints, sometimes we will read and discuss articles without writing reflections.
Check the class calendar carefully to ensure that you write on the correct article.
