jonathan edwardsJonathan Edwards was a 5th generation Puritan. We discussed the ways in which Puritan values and ideals shifted over time. By the time the serious and dutiful Edwards rose to the position of minister, the Puritan faith had gone through several important changes. Many church leaders, including Edwards, believed that the time was right to instill a spirit of revivalism in their followers. In what was known as the Great Awakening, Edwards and his contemporaries worked hard (quite possibly too hard) to remind their congregations of God's power, the church's authority, and their own inherent weakness.
