anne bradstreetAnne Bradstreet was the first woman to be recognized as an accomplished poet in the New World. She wrote poetry for herself and her family, and her brother-in-law took her work to London without her knowledge to be published. In a preface to her work, her brother-in-law explained that she was a virtuous woman so that people wouldn't be shocked by the impropriety of a female author.
